Wombwell Woods, near Barnsley, has had many sightings of said spirits, ghosts and other ghostly manifestations. The most reported sighting here is that of a male apparition that looks like ''Guy Fawkes'' and he is said to jump out on people as they walk through or drive past the woods. Bright balls of light have been reported here aswell with no logical explanation for what they are. Some locals claim they have been attacked here by unforseen entities and made to feel so faint they pass out. Shadow figures are another common sighting in the area too. link

The country lane that runs around the woods is said to have the spirit of a gent that looks similar to Guy Fawkes and has been allegedly known to jump out and attack and scare people. I wouldn't fancy meeting him on those lanes at night tho. It's total darkness up there with headlights off.

In 1964 my husband , then boyfriend had spent the evening in Barnsley. Instead of going back to Wombwell the regular road way we decided to go to Worsborough coming out at Wombwell Wood wherethe signal box is. We turned left and proceeded to drive slowly round the darkened roads. We were driving when out of the side of the road stepped person dressed like Guy Fawkes. as we neared him he lifted his cloak over his face, realdramatic, we drove straight through him.As we have always said we got the hell out of dodge.
Years later on a trip back to the Staye Iopened the South Yorkshire Times. 9nthe second page there was a letter written by a student from Sheffield University doing a paper on ghosts in Wombwell Woodsdressed like Guy Fawkes. I wrote straight back to her but never had an answer.Funnily enough she said I might not be able to write back to you..
